The national COVID-19 outbreak seems to have flattened out in the DFW metroplex . Sheltering in place and social distancing has kept the exposure of the virus well below what we had feared. America is opening up, and once again Texas is leading the way. Earlier today, Texas Governor Abbott had his news conference outlining plans for the economic reopening.
Governor Abbott declared that on-site classroom schools be closed until the end of this school year. However, Abbott also said that he expects students will return to school for the 2020-21 academic year. We are hopeful that
we will have summer school sessions at the school. This should be confirmed next week.
Students who have finished classes early may start on their next class and possibly finish it before September. This will help them get ahead. Summer school classes are being scheduled and teachers are being recruited, right now. We will have Coding, Math, and English. We are hoping to have other classes as demand sees fit. Meaghan Miner will be sending out a Sign-up Genius for those who are interested in summer school and want to schedule and/or suggest classes. We need a minimum of five students, possibly more, to offer a class. For instance, I have two requests for Latin and need at least three more.
Summer school will be held Monday through Friday during the month of June, with two weeks of school equaling one-half credit. Classes will be from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The school will be closed from June 29 – July 3, with students returning during the last four weeks of July. We may have classes the first two weeks of August if there is a demand. Not all classes will be offered all weeks.
This summer school offering is open to students not currently enrolled at Yorktown, a change from our past practice. Please let your friends and social networks know about our summer offerings. Many students at other schools need to make up for this past year.
Please help put the word out and share these video links on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or your favorite social media. Check out this link!
Students and families who are invited back will be receiving invoices this next week, so everyone will know where they stand, and we can complete our planning and teacher recruiting. This will also allow us to set the number of open slots by cohort.
Please call the office to schedule a call with me if you have any questions.
