Mr Sweet has taught at Yorktown for over five years and we wanted to kick off our Teacher Profiles with him. We are proud of our faculty and think you’ll see why each and every one of them is not only integral to what we do here but the success of our students.
Mr. Sweet started his career in the Navy and the spent the majority of his professional career in commercial nuclear power. He graduated from the University of Texas – Dallas Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree and has a teaching certification to teach high school math.
After retiring from nuclear power, Mr. Sweet decided to do what he loved – teaching. He worked at several schools before discovering Yorktown Education.
After learning more about the educational philosophy behind Yorktown he knew he had found the place aligned with his personal beliefs.
“We are helping shape more compassionate, informed and intellectually curious citizens to lead our country into the future. Yorktown Education is a leader in developing the kind of people that will make a difference in the world.”
He believes that working closely with the students and “keeping it simple” gives his students’ confidence that they previously did not have in mathematics. “Each student is an individual and responds differently to different teaching strategies. It is my job to find what inspires each student and generously apply that strategy.”
As part of our profile we are going to ask each teacher the same five questions and allow everyone to get to know them through their unique answers.
What brought you to teaching?
Retirement! I retired from my career in nuclear power and really thought about what would I love to do. The answer was teaching. I really wanted to change the world as a younger man. Little did I know that would come about as a teacher in my 2nd act career.
What are your passions?
My adopted children. I adopted two kids seven years ago and really my passion is making sure those two are raising them correctly.
What do you like to do in your free time?
The three of us (myself and two kids) love to work out in the yard. We do gardening, planting flowers and keeping the yard in good shape.
What was the last book you read?
The Witness by Noami Kryske. I usually read to relax.
What is your favorite aspect of teaching at Yorktown?
After discovering the Yorktown Education model, I love the fact that the kids can go as fast as they want. It’s really cool to see them take off. Now we don’t let them always go as slow as they want but we do let them go as fast as they want. As long as they are showing the proficiency, then our students can really accelerate as fast and far as their minds can take them. It’s really better for the child as an individual.
We really love working with Mr. Sweet and hope you enjoyed getting to know him. Stay tuned to the blog, we’ll be highlighting more teachers and staff here at Yorktown Education.
