Relationships Outlast Rules in the Classroom

Structure, consistency, and rules do matter in the classroom. But over time, it has become apparent that what matters even more are relationships. Interaction between teachers and students and students and other students identifies the quality of meaningful relationships that contribute to learning.
The most obvious way to build relationships in the classroom is through sharing. Teachers who take time to share things about themselves with their students build a bridge to greater understanding. Students feel the freedom to be themselves and share ideas and opinions openly with each other and within the classroom in general.
Still, classroom expectations must be clearly defined at the onset. When students have a clear idea of what is expected from them, they perform better.
Getting to know each other might include a short presentation about your family, your interests, what you love to do most (your passions), things you would like to change and how you would make that happen, and even things like your favorite books or what you did that was fun when you were 10 years old.
Some other ideas to help generate relationship-building in the classroom are:
- Sharing events or special occasions within a student’s family
- Bringing artifacts or special items to class to share
- A game of finding out how other students share the same likes
- Pair and share activities that help students get to know one another.
Creating a classroom environment of freedom, respect for the individual, sharing, caring and collaborating diminishes the feeling of a ‘controlled’ classroom. Students develop more of a community-centric attitude and learn how to better connect with themselves and others.
