You and your child will be happier and more gratified by enrolling at Yorktown Education.
Understanding why our education system faces so many challenges is no easy task, however, one thing we do know is that identifying the underlying problems is a start.
The state of flux our educational system is in right now due to COVID-19 only adds to the problems that already existed. Why are children not happy in school? Why are they not progressing? What’s missing that’s preventing our children from achieving their educational goals? And most of all, what can be done to improve things?
Whether you ask a student, parents, educators or lawmakers these questions, you’ll discover some of the same reasons on the down side. Let’s look at a few of the major roadblocks.
Classroom Size
When classrooms are overcrowded students lose access to individualized support from the teacher. This lack of one-on-one teacher interaction leaves many gaps in a child’s learning. Packed classrooms also contribute to disorder and lack of control.
Technology
Not surprising, sometimes students know more about technology than teachers, which presents a setting for disruption and knowing who’s in charge. While technology can be a welcome teaching tool it can also be an interruption if not managed.
Student Attitudes and Behaviors
There are many reasons students act up in class. Problems at home, peer pressure, lack of interest in the subject matter, and more. Teachers, parents and peers play a major role in finding solutions to poor behavior in the classroom.
Bullying
Bullying is a problem that has only grown worse over the last several years. Why? Probably because it was not addressed earlier on. When bullies are allowed to get by with their negative behavior it only reinforces their actions.
Boredom
Lack of challenging curriculum creates boredom that can spiral downward into apathy for many students. If a child does not have the opportunity to make the connection with what they love about learning, the continuation stops. Once they discover something that inspires them, the desire to learn more kicks in.
Parent Involvement
When parents don’t have time or just don’t care to be involved in their child’s education, the results are sadly telling. Children need parental support just as much as they need support from their teachers. Without it many children never reach that initial point of connection to want to learn more.
The Yorktown Education Difference
When parents and students discover the measurable differences offered by Yorktown Education, there’s no turning back. Many Yorktown students have started their journey with us as young as five years old and going on to graduate with honors and several hours of earned college credits to boot.
Perhaps the single most distinguishing aspect of a Yorktown Education experience is the freedom of self-discovery from day one. When given the opportunity to gravitate toward what inspires a child’s mind, they are immediately motivated to want to learn more. Once a child’s imagination is given free rein to explore the wealth of choices, the abundance of opportunity and the ability to decide, the world of learning opens widely.
Yorktown Education is student-centric, mastery-based in its learning methodology, without the limitations of age or grade levels attached. If a child masters curriculum at a certain level, they move on to the next at their own pace.
Smaller classes mean each student is given the attention needed by their teachers. Our instructors get to know each of their students to better understand their learning style, what motivates them and any special needs required for quality learning.
Remote learning has always been available at Yorktown Education. Since our doors opened in 2004, students have had the option to work remotely as needed or preferred. In that time we have more than proven how effective remote learning can be. We have high achievers to prove it.
Specialty learning at Yorktown is a favorite of our students. From fine art to musical theatre, gymnastics to fencing, and even Mandarin Chinese. Yorktown students are engaged and motivated whether in class or out, taking with them an ingrained love of learning and discovery.
Students who wish to earn college credit before getting to college have the opportunity to do so. Many of our graduates arrive at college ahead of the learning curve with as many as 60 well-earned college credits.
Yorktown Education is a leading innovator in student-centered education with very high accreditation scores and accreditation by AdvancED, SACS/CASI and the NCAA.
