Achieving truly effective education necessitates a partnership between school and home. The best practices that connect school and home must enable a creative partnership that is shared by students, parents and teachers.
Innovative projects that stimulate students to think for themselves, yet also manage to include parents and caregivers in the process benefit everyone. Events like family outings that include historic sites are a good adventure in learning and the experience can be shared at school with classmates and teachers.
Real-life lessons can also help children understand the reason behind certain learning projects in class. It’s not uncommon for students to question why they are asked to study certain subjects that seem irrelevant to them. Tying in real-world concepts helps explain this. Topics such as making healthy choices related to friends, food and fun, getting plenty of sleep and maintaining responsible behavior reinforce the value of real-life lessons.
At Yorktown, we provide welcoming opportunities for parents to be involved in the classroom, where they can see first-hand what happens and how students respond and interact. For prospective parents, we extend an invitation to join us for coffee the first and second Tuesday of each month along with a guided tour of our campus.
Meeting teachers and staff provides an opportunity to learn more about Yorktown academics. More than half of our faculty holds advanced degrees in the arts, science, business, law, and English. This level of experience makes Yorktown Education an exceptional learning environment.
Encouraging a true ‘love of learning’ in students at an early age is essential. That’s why the learning process must be grounded in what inspires each individual student then giving them the freedom to explore, invent and discover.
With students, parents/caregivers and teachers working together to fortify the school and home connection, a winning collaboration emerges that transforms teaching and learning.
Our commitment at Yorktown is to instill each student with core values of respect, responsibility, and innovation all of which prepares them for rewarding lives of leadership and the opportunity to contribute measurably in their world.
