While collaboration in the classroom is a positive force, there’s also much to be said for students who learn how to be independent learners. It’s not an either-or thing, but a healthy combination of both.
Arriving at college, students often lack effective learning strategies that help them retain what they learn and progress. In fact, much of what students learn by age 18 is forgotten.
In a fast-paced, changing world, the ability to apply new skills is a must. It really comes down to ‘learning how to learn’ and students who get an early start in how to learn independently have a measurable advantage.
Motivation is the key that unlocks the desire to learn which is a path toward lifelong learning. That’s what makes Yorktown Education such an educational stand-out. We help students discover their own, unique passion for learning by encouraging them to “do what you love”.
Given the freedom of self-discovery, students are able to learn new ways of learning. We guide our students to embrace how good they feel when they learn something new which reinforces the experience on an emotional level.
When students share their learning goals with friends and get support, it’s very motivating. At Yorktown, we help students set their goals and support them as they go. Making a commitment to themselves enables students to become self-disciplined learners and use their time better, learning to avoid distractions.
Students are better independent learners when they learn to self-assess. This process helps them recap what they’ve learned and experience learning challenges they must learn to overcome.
Some of the rewards of independent learning are things like completing assignments on time, better grades, a greater enjoyment of school because they have the tools to do better. Independent learning also contributes enormously to a student’s positive identify, increasing overall self-confidence.
