Given a Choice, Students Prefer to Make Their Own

Why does it make such a difference in learning when students are given the freedom to make their own decisions? Is it because choosing for oneself acknowledges confident, critical thinking? Is it because it is more exciting and stirs an innate passion for a special topic or idea? Or is it about the exhilaration of being free to choose — the freedom of self-expression?
Probably all of the above are answers to ‘why’ students prefer to make their own choices.
Meeting requirements and following ironclad rules set down by the teacher can be intimidating and very limiting. While creating something of your own sparks an inner desire to see it through from start to finish. Choosing for themselves often awakens ambition and determination students didn’t realize they possessed.
Traditional learning gives students a feeling of being rushed or imposed upon to complete an assignment that simply holds no inspiration to complete. This does little to support students’ potential or encourage them to think for themselves.
Learning that provides students with choice opens a path for them to eagerly plunge into work that really matters. Whether a project is about small choices or large ones, the value is maintaining the focus on a student’s choice as a way of also giving them a voice.
In order to produce quality work about issues that matter, opportunities must be present in the learning environment. At Yorktown Education, we make that a priority. Our students have access to resources, opportunities and tools to experience transformative learning.
When given the flexibility and choice in their learning environment, students are able to more easily find their passion—what they love to do, and realize the value and strength of their own voice through their work.
This kind of learning makes an indelible imprint on students as they progress in school and in life, building self-confidence and a strong sense of purpose that will lead them to even loftier challenges and more meaningful successes.
