Learning is a lifelong endeavor that extends far beyond school, but from an educational perspective, there’s the continual quest for ways to improve how to learn. One method that has proven successful for years is discovery learning, based on students having the freedom to find out things on their own through research, problem-solving, collaboration, experiments and questions.
In the discovery learning process, students discover things that may seem unrelated or odd to them at first, but ultimately these things connect and make sense. They learn to arrive at a conclusion for themselves. Through inquiries they make and by ferreting out research, new information is unearthed, becoming an integral building block to their creative thinking and continuing educational journey.
Discovery learning is very effective in class when problem-solving exercises are undertaken. Students are encouraged to look at their own experiences to find answers and come to conclusions. It helps them better understand controversial issues and real world scenarios. By asking other people what they think, evaluating a different perspective and discussing the topic openly, a more in-depth understanding is reached.
Science studies offer another opportunity for discovery learning. Experiments disclose new data which, in turn, raises the question of ‘why’, beckoning the next step to learn more. Math projects also provide stimulus for the discovery process, when students discover a different way to reach the same conclusion can be enlightening.
Generally, discovery learning has proven to be an effective educational method, providing multiple benefits that help to integrate students and activate conversations that might not otherwise occur. It also motivates students to think more creatively and lessen their inhibitions when interacting socially. Sharing ideas, collaborating on solutions and working together as a team, builds skills students can use for a lifetime.
At Yorktown Education our students have the opportunity to discover what they love doing the most and we have the opportunity to get to know them as individuals and understand their learning style. We provide a discovery learning environment that meets their learning wants as well as their learning needs. Once students discover the freedom of “doing what they love” in a discovery learning environment, school becomes a source of inspiration, excitement and the coolest place to be.
